Blog post # 9 - DP Reel and Artist Statement

Hello Everyone, here is the vimeo link to my reel for the course. Below the link is my artist statement.

I want to tell stories, and as filmmakers, it's probably safe to say that is something we all seek. For me though, that particular story telling focus revolves around people, human stories. I find people to be the most fascinating subject of all; their struggles, their loves, their heartbreaks, their pitfalls, and the shining moments are the moments that I'm always seeking, and I choose to capture as cinematographer. The films I love the most and constantly return to for inspiration, have solidified their place in large part because of the character driven narratives. It's those types of films that I most connect with, and that I try to achieve whenever I tell a story. When I read a script, it's always the people that drive the story for me. All of the other elements within the process of cinematography are tools and extensions to tell the story of the characters. With each composition, framing, and lighting setup that I choose, I think of what it says about the characters, the people of the story, and how can I best make those choices to bring that connection with the audience. I have a way to go with my skills; I will not proclaim any mastery, and I'm uncertain that one can, without hesitation, every completely claim a total mastery of the art form. The art form is one that calls for adaptation and change, as well as a constant dedication to the craft, and my goal to always strive for those characteristic, and to always be as malleable as the medium itself. The education never ceases, and I am driven to constantly learn and improve so that I can capture the best moments of the human experience.

  2. I particularly love some of the shots on Tentative. Some are a bit overexposed, but done so in a perfectly justifiable way, enhancing the beauty of the shots and highlighting their hair.

  3. My Dearest... there's a shot out of focus but overall I think the lighting and framing are kinda touching...

  6. I thought your reel was great, but I would have loved to see some of those beautiful shots intertwined in a montage rather than back to back. The song fit perfectly with the mood though so I really liked that! Great job!

  7. Loved seeing older actors for once. Don't get to see much of them in student shorts. The parking lot bickering scene intrigued me for some reason. The lighting perhaps? It was really bright but in a way that intensified the characters' argument.

  8. Nice job! I liked the older actors. It adds a lot of production value to not have student actors for a change. The last shot looked really nice! Good job.

  9. Todd, great reel. Nice variety. I felt like some of the shots in black and white were a little darker than I would prefer, but I loved how you separated all your shots according to what film they were a part of.

  11. Todd,

Your artist statement was really great and totally fits the shots I saw in your reel! My only suggestion would be maybe to mix up the order of them. When they were all together by film, I found myself trying to find the story in them, and not necessarily focus on their look. I think it worked fine, but I think if they were all intertwined it could really keep the audience's focus on the shots and present a stronger reel. Overall... great work! I definitely think you are super talented!!

  12. Beautifully written artist statement. I thought your reel really emphasized character. However, I thought there was a few shots that were weaker than the others, like the out of focus one of the woman (wonderful, wonderful shot, but out of focus) and a few indoor ones from Tentative seemed underexposed. Overall, very well put together reel, I look forward to seeing what you create in the future!
